Volvo L90 Electric supports Ragn-Sells' work toward a circular economy

Swedish firm Ragn-Sells transforms waste into reusable raw materials and contributes to the transition toward a circular economy. After having the opportunity to be one of the first to test Volvo CE’s new L90 Electric wheel loader, they have now chosen to lease it for a five-year period. We spoke with Mattias Sjöström, site manager at Treatment & Detox in Gothenburg.

Why did you choose the L90 Electric?

We have a goal to use fossil-free vehicles and reduce our emissions by 2030. Electric vehicles and machines are a key part of our transition efforts.

How is it used in your daily operations?

Both our Recycling and Treatment & Detox operations in Gothenburg handle large volumes of waste. Each operation uses an L90 Electric for a wide range of tasks, including loading truck and trailer transports of up to 45 tons per unit, as well as cleaning, pushing materials, and managing internal flows.

Has the L90 Electric met your expectations?

The driving experience is excellent. Operating an electric machine feels much like operating a diesel machine, but the L90 Electric is quicker and more responsive, particularly in its hydraulics. Everything is controlled through the lever, so there’s no need to work the throttle in the same way. One operator was initially skeptical but now prefers the L90 Electric and uses it more than anyone else on site.

What other advantages have you experienced besides comfort and feel?

The environmental aspect is an important factor. The machine is also quieter, especially outside the cab, and it’s size makes it suitable for many different types of operations. It can load large containers but also access tight spaces, something that isn’t possible with larger machines. Many of Ragn-Sells’ facilities perform similar tasks in different ways. Ultimately, it’s the available space and specific operational needs that determine which machine is the best fit.

What type of charger do you use in your operations?

The integrated AC charger is used overnight. During periods of intensive use, supplementary charging is required, and via our own public charging stations we can charge from 10% to 100% in one hour. We are also planning a 50-kilowatt charger on site.

Ragn-Sells has already come a long way in its electrification journey, and new solutions to help achieve the company’s climate and sustainability goals are continuously being evaluated. The Volvo L90 Electric is a welcome addition along the way.
