From the Race Villages around the world, hundreds of thousands of visitors got the chance to witness a spectacular array of activities and entertainment – both on land and at sea.

What was the race about

The cause

The Volvo Ocean Race was one of the world’s longest and toughest professional sporting event in the world. But for Volvo Group, it was more than just a yacht race. The event represented a unique opportunity to build relationships with customers and demonstrate Volvo Group’s strong commitment to cleaning up our oceans.

All in it together

The Volvo brand was shared by Volvo Cars and the Volvo Group, which means joint ownership of the Volvo Ocean Race. The Volvo Ocean Race was the leading offshore sailing challenge for crews, with a number of host cities that make it possible for viewers to experience the sport from close proximity. Established in 1973 as the Whitbread Round the World Race, the Volvo Ocean Race has evolved, with a renewed emphasis on the Southern Ocean for the 2017-18 race – and a new set of rules. Teams were encouraged to diversify their crews with a mix of male and female sailors, and demonstrate strategic innovations during the race.

ACTIVITIES DURING THE RACE

Excavator Challenge

At each port, visitors were welcome to operate a specially-built electric Volvo ECR25D compact excavator. Visitors could take on the challenge or watch as the athletes from the Volvo Ocean Race sailing crews took their skills from sea to land.

Volvo Ocean Race Conference and Seminars

Volvo customers were invited to participate in the Building Tomorrow conference and attend seminars that address the importance innovation, fuel efficiency, site safety and Volvo Services. Talking with like-minded individuals and learning more about how Volvo CE’s involvement with the WWF and Construction Climate Challenge helped protect the environment through the entire construction supply chain.

Brand film

Volvo CE was proud to launch the ‘Building Tomorrow’ brand film at the Volvo Ocean Race in Alicante. The film follows the stunning journey through ice, snow, and sand, and pays homage to our customers and all the dedicated individuals around that globe that work with us to build the world we want to live in.

The race was taking action to help ‘Turn the Tide on Plastic’ a campaign that addresses the rapidly growing and critical problem of plastic polluting our oceans. The initiative was highlighted by the United Nations Environment’s Clean Seas campaign, which Volvo Ocean Race is proud to adopt.
