Proven performance drives M Civils to double Volvo A40 hauler fleet within weeks of first Southern African delivery

Proven performance drives mining contractor to expand fleet from 12 to 24 units, validating new-generation articulated hauler technology in demanding chrome mining operations.

When M Civils took delivery of Southern Africa's first new-generation Volvo A40 articulated haulers, the results spoke for themselves. Within weeks, they ordered 12 additional units for their newly awarded opencast chrome mining project in Rustenburg.

By early August, each of the initial 12 A40s had clocked 600-700 uninterrupted hours across 12-hour shifts —performance that validated M Civils' decision to double the fleet to 24 units supporting production targets of 90,000 tons of run-of-mine chrome per month.

Measurable performance in demanding conditions

On 1.7-2 km haul routes, the A40s consume just 10 liters per hour on overburden and 14 liters per hour when hauling chrome, a material with a specific gravity of 4.5-4.8 that tests every component of the hauler’s capability.

"Given that our seams dip at 10-12 degrees on average, articulated haulers are the perfect fit for these mining conditions," said Site Manager Mpho Ramalepe. "Even in these early stages, we've been impressed by how quick these haulers are over rough terrain. Faster cycle times translate directly into higher productivity."

The A40's performance results from Volvo CE's in-house developed transmission and advanced traction control, designed specifically for uneven surfaces and steep gradients. The redesigned cab delivers improved visibility and noise reduction, keeping operators focused and productive through long shifts.

Precision technology optimizes every load

With monthly targets this demanding, precision loading is essential. M Civils relies on Volvo's Haul Assist system with On-Board Weighing, integrated through the Volvo Co-Pilot display, to eliminate guesswork on every load.

"The On-Board Weighing system is vital for us. It helps prevent over- and underloading, optimizing both efficiency and machine life," said Vincent de Kock, Contracts Manager of M Civils.

Total cost of ownership drives decision

The decision to expand came down to total cost of ownership—a calculation that factors in operating costs, maintenance requirements, and lifecycle value, not just upfront investment.

"While Volvo is a premium product, we look beyond the upfront cost," said Reino de Kock, COO. "Factoring in operating, maintenance, and lifecycle costs, Volvo delivers strong value. Just as important is the support from Babcock. Every machine is only as good as the backup it receives."

With the expanded fleet now operational, M Civils has the hauling capacity needed to meet their production commitments on a contract that will define the company's mining operations.

"When a customer doubles their fleet this quickly, it shows confidence not only in the machines, but in Babcock as a long-term partner," said Lance Mannix, Head of Equipment Sales at Babcock. "M Civils measured the results and made a decision based on proven performance - that’s the kind of partnership we aim to build with every customer."
