Construction Climate Challenge

Helping the industry make a difference

Construction Climate Challenge

Responsible for more than 30 per cent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, the construction industry plays a vital role in the future sustainability of our planet. And as our cities grow, the problem is not going away.

The Construction Climate Challenge (CCC) is an initiative hosted by Volvo Construction Equipment to promote sustainability throughout the entire construction industry and provide much needed funding for environmental research.

We aim to create a dialogue between industry representatives, academics and politicians, as well as providing funding for new research and sharing existing knowledge and resources to help the industry make a difference for generations to come. The CCC is part of our commitment to WWF’s Climate Savers Program.

It doesn’t matter who takes the lead, as long as the lead is taken.

MORE ON THE INITIATIVE

The Construction Climate Challenge aims

  • Create a dialogue among industry representatives, academics and politicians.
  • Provide funding for new research.
  • Share existing knowledge and resources to help the industry make a difference.
  • Encourage awareness and engagement.

Covering the entire length of the value chain

  • From extraction and production of building materials, to road and general construction, to demolition and recycling.
  • Including all stakeholders.
  • From a complete life cycle perspective.

Research is at the heart of the CCC

  • Supporting and initiating research projects in areas with relevance to our industry.
  • Acting as a bridge between the construction industry and sustainability research.
  • Promoting collaboration between researchers, companies and organizations as well as publishing research papers and documentation of the projects.

CCC invites partners to participate

  • Companies throughout the industry value chain e.g. suppliers of raw- and building materials, contractors, construction companies, demolition companies and recycling specialists etc.
  • Other stakeholders, including NGO’s such as the WWF, academia, politicians and the wider society.

This is why we are hosting the CCC

Volvo CE estimates that 90% of its climate impact is indirect, resulting from the use of its machines:
  • As these are used in nearly all steps of the construction industry life cycle, Volvo has a network to reach many major participants in the industry.
  • Working with partners is the most effective way to reduce the climate impact.

About the research

Research is at the heart of the CCC. Through supporting and initiating research projects in areas with relevance to our industry, the initiative acts as a bridge between the construction industry and sustainability research. We promote collaborations between researchers, companies and organizations. We also publish research papers and offer in-depth documentation of the projects.
