Construction Climate Challenge

Construction Climate Challenge

Responsible for more than 30 per cent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, the construction industry plays a vital role in the future sustainability of our planet. And as our cities grow, the problem is not going away.

The Construction Climate Challenge (CCC) has been an initiative hosted by Volvo Construction Equipment between 2014 and 2020 to promote sustainability throughout the entire construction industry value chain and to provide funding for environmental research.

The CCC has been part of our commitment to WWF’s Climate Savers Program during 2014 to 2020. Going forward Volvo CE is integrating experiences and key learnings from the CCC initiative in our work with delivering sustainable transport and infrastructure solutions. A continued interaction between construction industry stakeholders is important to secure common success.

Covering the entire length of the value chain

  • From extraction and production of building materials, to road and general construction, to demolition and recycling.
  • Including all stakeholders.
  • From a complete life cycle perspective.
  • With special focus on embodied carbon.

This is why Volvo ce has been hosting the CCC

Volvo CE estimates that 90% of its climate impact is indirect, resulting from the use of its machines:

  • Volvo CE machines are used in nearly all steps of the construction industry life cycle, Volvo has a network to reach many major participants in the industry.
  • Working with partners is the most effective way to reduce the climate impact.

Research

Research has been at the heart of the CCC. Through supporting and initiating research projects in areas with relevance to our industry, the CCC initiative has acted as a bridge between the construction industry and sustainability research. We have promoted collaborations between researchers, companies and organizations. We have also published research papers and offered in-depth documentation of the projects.
