Volvo Construction Equipment proves its power for innovation with yet another engineering feat. More than 50 years after inventing the articulated hauler concept, Volvo CE has joined forces with LEGO® Technic to unveil a full functional A60H hauler model with automatic transmission –the first of its kind.
Volvo Construction Equipment introduced the world to the amazing abilities of articulated haulers in 1966, with the arrival of the diminutive DR631 – with its 10-ton payload and ‘Gravel Charlie’ nickname. Not only were we the first, Volvo articulated haulers remain the market leader some 54 years later. Just as the real 60-ton capacity A60H continues is a technological tour-de-force and an industry standard for smart design, the new LEGO® Technic 6X6 articulated hauler Volvo A60H model is an equally impressive and pioneering work of engineering.
Inside its giant box are 2,193 pieces, including six large tyres and three heavy-duty motors. And just like the real thing, it is a technological marvel, featuring app-controlled operation and a fully automatic transmission – a first for the LEGO® Technic brand.
The real life 55 tonne (60 ton) capacity Volvo A60H is designed for heavy hauling in severe off-road operations, including quarries, opencast mines and large earth-moving operations. And the engineers from both LEGO Technic and Volvo CE wanted the new model to reflect the quality, reliability and durability of the real thing.
The motors are integrated and hidden under the hauler body and the cab – and the Bluetooth for the control hub is cleverly turned on by rotating the A60’s cab-top beacon. Much like all the electronic machine control systems on the real machine, the model’s Technic CONTROL+ hub and the mobile phone application that goes with it operate the model.
The model is big – measuring 200mm (7in.) high, 200mm (7in.) wide and a vast 600mm (23in.) long. It is also packed with clever features, not least the complex internal gear system – which is fully automatic and motorized – just like the real thing.
Kids can take control of the hauler using the LEGO Technic CONTROL+ app. Use the different control screens to drive forward, reverse, steer, change speed and gear, or unload the hauler’s bucket. Kids also get a personalized dashboard with authentic cockpit controls. Challenges and achievements help kids develop their driving skills and there’s inspirational content to discover in the app too.
