Changwon is also the location of Volvo CE’s largest excavator manufacturing plant and state-of-the-art R&D facility, which is responsible for around 55% of the company’s total excavator production.
The vibrant, multi-cultural city just west of Busan, has one of the largest per capita foreign communities in Korea thanks to its milder winters and beautiful spring, summer and autumn weather, and the presence of other major Korean industrial firms. And this is certainly something that Volvo CE is keen to embrace. French-born Dimitri Milosevic, a Global Procurement Lead, was the first foreign employee hired in Changwon through Volvo CE’s Global Hiring program. Dimitri quickly learned that Volvo CE, like Changwon itself, is welcoming to everyone.
“Due to the diverse cultural backgrounds and native languages, communication can sometimes be challenging,” Dimitri notes. “However, the company provides opportunities to learn Korean, which I have embraced as I try to immerse myself in the Korean culture. The commitment to diversity and inclusion fosters respect and effective collaboration.”
It's not just cultural diversity that Volvo CE Changwon champions but age and gender diversity too. Minhee Ju joined the team as a Production Operator through the Volvo Group Korea Gender Diversity program. “It can be challenging for women wanting to enter this sector, as the ratio of female employees is relatively low,” Minhee observes.
“However, employees work together irrespective of gender and everyone is working hard to dismantle the stereotype of construction being a male-dominated field.”
Siho Lim, an R&D Engineer adds. “I used to think that construction and manufacturing would be rigid and hierarchical, but my experience here has proven otherwise. Employees of all ages collaborate with each other, creating a well-balanced working environment.”
Hyeyeon Kim, who began her career as an engineer, and now works as a Law and Regulations Specialist highlights Volvo CE’s support of a healthy work-life balance. “Making sure you have a work-life balance, as well as career development potential, is crucial. Volvo CE Korea promotes a culture that respects personal lives. As a mother of a 10-year-old daughter, I have no difficulties balancing parenting and work life due to flexible hours and supportive policies. Alongside this, there are diverse opportunities to develop and grow.”
Beyond work, Changwon offers numerous recreational opportunities. Its coastal location and nearby mountains, such as Mount Cheonju, provide a range of outdoor activities. The city is also a haven for birdwatchers, while its cherry blossom festival every spring attracts millions of visitors from all over the world.
Jeongeun Choi, a Supplier Development Engineer, notes: “There is so much to do here. I find that being outdoors is a great stress relief. Whether it’s going surfing, which I’ve been doing for 10 years now, or jogging or going to the gym – just moving and being physical is a great feeling. Yongji Lake is a very peaceful place to be outdoors.”
Minju Kim, a Site Buyer in Changwon, adds: “Changwon is made up of smaller cities, each with its own unique character. Living in Jinhae is great for families, safe, clean and right by the port. The summer is all about being outdoors, like going camping and hiking in the mountains.”
