10% more fuel efficiency

The ECR255 boasts all the power of its equivalent Volvo crawler excavator along with a 10% improvement in fuel efficiency. The ECR255 takes fuel efficiency to a new level with the redesigned main control valve which enables faster hydraulic movements and more efficient use of power, boosting overall machine performance. Additional features such as new electric fan, engine pump optimisation, auto power boost, and many other intelligent functions, combine to result in lower fuel consumption and lower operating costs.

New electro-hydraulic control system

Central to the improvement in fuel efficiency is the advanced electro-hydraulic control system with main control valve (MCV). This intelligent technology uses electronic sensors to monitor the machine's movements and send signals to the machine’s on-board computer (ECU). The ECU then interprets the data and directs the MCV accordingly, ensuring smooth, responsive control of the boom, arm, bucket and other hydraulic functions. The result is more precise controls, enabling efficient digging and loading.

Engine pump optimization

Engine pump optimization reduces engine speed to 1600 rpm (compared to the previous model) for digging and dumping operations, reducing fuel consumption while maintaining optimum machine performance. An engine speed of 1800rpm is only used for travel operation when it needed. The system controls the hydraulic pump flow rate and pressure based on the load and speed requirements, helping to lower operating costs through improved fuel efficiency and reduced maintenance costs.

New electric fan

The new electric fan only runs when needed, reducing engine load and power loss, contributing to lower fuel consumption, lower noise and is also easier to maintain. The smart, targeted cooling system cools components on demand and uses less energy than traditional fans, for a more efficient machine operation.

A host of features in the ECR255 contribute to the outstanding levels of fuel efficiency, which includes the powerful and efficient Volvo engine, new engine work modes, auto idling, automatic engine shutdown, Dig Assist and Volvo Active Control.

A new level of performance

Take short swing performance to the next level. The new machine design, including heavier counterweight, unlocks a new level of performance, most notably a 7% increase in lifting capacity. This is combined with the electro-hydraulic control system with redesigned main control valve and customized priority setting function, which enables fast cycle times and optimum efficiency out in the field. Additional functions such as auto power boost and auto travel boost further support productivity and enhance operator comfort.

Volvo Active Control

Volvo Active Control automates boom and bucket movements for faster, more precise digging. Part of the Dig Assist suite of tools, and integrated within Volvo Co-Pilot, with single-lever control operators can achieve accurate grades up to 45% faster, with less rework and reduced fatigue. The result is more efficiency, safety and ease of use – helping operators to unlock the full potential of their Volvo excavator.

Boundary limits

An additional feature of Volvo Active Control is boundary limits. An ideal solution when working in short swing applications, these intelligent parameter settings help operators to achieve a safe and productive performance. Depth Limit stops the bucket from digging too deep, protecting underground utilities. Height Limit prevents contact with overhead hazards like power lines. Swing Fence restricts side movement to avoid nearby obstacles.

Boom/Swing priority functions

Advanced electric control joystick and full electric travel pedals provide lightning-fast response times. Boom/Swing priority functions help operators work with speed and ease by prioritizing one function over another. When completing precision tasks or working with heavy tools, the speed of the boom down function can be changed thanks to the boom down speed control.

Floating dozer blade

The new floating dozer blade speeds grading efficiency, especially when working on uneven terrain, reducing the need for operator input and manual adjustments. The result is faster clean-up, backfill and levelling tasks – boosting overall productivity.

Made for uptime

The ECR255 boasts some of the longest service intervals in the industry, with 1000-hour engine oil, 3000-hour hydraulic oil changes to mention a few. More synchronized service intervals (all 1000-hour multiples) further increase uptime and reduce costs

Smart View with POC (People and Obstacle Classification)

Volvo Smart View with Obstacle Classification lets you focus on work while your Volvo looks out for you. The system combines a 360° camera view with highly intelligent radar detection which can differentiate between people and objects thanks to deep learning technology. It gives operators an enhanced real-time view of their surroundings and automatic alerts if people or obstacles are detected, helping to facilitate a safe and productive operation for those inside and outside of the machine.

Easy serviceability

Grouped filters and lubrication points can be easily accessed thanks to the new right hand service access to the upper platform, along with urea tank filling from the ground level. The HVAC main filter can also be replaced from inside the cab for a much easier and straightforward process.

Easier, cleaner oil and filter changes

A quick drain port with standard hose connection simplifies fluid draining. A shut-off valve prevents leaks during fuel filter changes, keeping technicians and the environment cleaner. An optional ground-level access oil sampling port further supports cleaner and safer oil changes.

The ECR255 combines a short swing radius machine with conventional machine cab, resulting in an outstanding 20% more in-cab space compared to a traditional short swing radius cab. The ROPS cab is complemented by a host of features designed to boost operator comfort including 50% improved in-cab cooling performance, less noise thanks to new electric fans, Bluetooth connectivity, wireless phone charging, extensive storage and two filter system for better air quality: pre-filter and main filter.

Outstanding visibility

The newly designed cab – including right-hand side access, new MCV box design and handrail – significantly improves right hand, front and side visibility, giving the operator a clearer view for safe and productive operations. Visibility can be further enhanced with the optional one-piece windshield. Large mirrors with electric heating as an option help operators to work safely even in wintery conditions.
