The training wheels are on: Unique Volvo machine helps students learn the future of construction

The Geradstetten training center has invested in a special tailor-made solution: a Volvo EW220E wheeled excavator with elevating cab, GPS-controlled dozer blade and an innovative quick coupler system. This unique machine is being used to teach students about the construction sites of the future.

At the Construction Training Center in Geradstetten, one of the largest competence centers for construction equipment and transport technology in Germany, the focus has always been on modern machines and future-oriented training.

Now the center is going a remarkable step further: with a custom-made Volvo EW220E mobile excavator, equipped with a liftable cab, a 6-way dozer blade, GNSS control, tilt rotator and a Movtec quick coupler, which is still rare in Germany. With this specially-adapted solution, the center is setting a clear example of technical innovation in vocational training.

The decision to purchase this machine was not made by chance. Rather, it was the result of a deliberate future-oriented process, as Michael Heim, Head of Training at the center, explains: "We asked ourselves where the construction site of tomorrow is heading - and how can we realistically integrate this into our training. It quickly became clear: we need a machine that can do more than the standard."

One machine for many tasks - just like a real construction site

The 6-way dozer blade, which is normally found on track-type tractors or graders, was a particular focus. In combination with the quick-change system, it can be used flexibly on the wheeled excavator – for example for grading or pulling fine profiles, even in confined spaces. The integrated GNSS control system ensures maximum precision. The desired height is controlled directly via a digital terrain model – either in ‘excavator’ or ‘dozer’ mode. This makes the machine extremely versatile.

"In the past, you would have needed two or three machines for this,” says Heim. “Today, our EW220 shows that many tasks can be carried out efficiently with a single machine – and that's exactly what we want to teach our apprentices.”

The apprentices should not only learn how to operate construction machinery, but also understand the technological possibilities offered by modern equipment today – and how to combine them sensibly.

The elevating cab is also a well thought-out extra. It allows the driver to keep an overview, literally, when feeding screening plants or during demolition, for example. The elevated seating position provides a view of hoppers and work areas that would not be visible from the ground.

"This is not only practical, but also an important safety benefit," emphasizes Heim.

Scandinavian vision meets German training

The MovTec quick coupler on the undercarriage is a special feature. Long established in the Nordic countries, this technology is still rarely found in Germany. Yet it offers enormous advantages. Attachments such as pallet forks, dozer blades or buckets can be changed within seconds, directly from the driver's seat. Transport on the construction site is also more flexible, as the standard trailer coupling allows the wheeled excavator to tow equipment or material itself.

"In Scandinavia, you can see how efficiently this technology is used on everyday construction sites," says Heim. "It was important to us that our trainees get to know these possibilities at an early stage. If they later see similar systems in their companies, they already know how to work with them – or can provide the impetus to introduce such technology."

This openness to new ideas is a central part of the training concept. At the training center, trainees learn to work with machines from a wide range of manufacturers, regardless of what they are used to from their training company. "Some come with very fixed ideas - but here they can discover what is possible,” says Heim. ‘This not only broadens their horizons, but also strengthens their skills and independence."

A one-off – built for the training of tomorrow

The fact that this special machine could be realized at all is thanks to the close cooperation between the training center, the dealer Robert Aebi and Special Application Solutions (SAS) from Volvo CE. Alexander Lemke, customer advisor at Robert Aebi, was involved in the planning right from the start. It was clear from the very first meeting that this machine would require custom work. And that's exactly what it did – from the first draft to delivery.

Thomas Nather, Product Manager for Special Solutions at Volvo CE, describes the process as a real team effort: "We're not talking about a simple ordering process here, but an individual machine project. Every detail of the equipment – from the cab to the quick coupler – was coordinated with the customer and implemented by our SAS department. The special thing about it: all conversions are fully integrated into the Volvo system – with full warranty and service support."

Volvo CE shows that special requests are not only tolerated, but actively encouraged – if they create real added value. For the training center, this commitment is worth its weight in gold: the machine was precisely tailored to the requirements of the training - and is also a technical highlight in the fleet.

Impressing the trainees

Even before the official briefing, many trainees were impressed. Dominik Pajdzik, a construction equipment operator in training at Haag, drives an EWR170E in his company, but is not familiar with any of the additional features such as the blade or the elevating cab.

"I find it totally exciting that we have a machine like this available here,” he says. “Especially the dozer blade with GPS – I've only seen that in videos so far. And now I get to try it out for myself."

Florian Gide, apprentice at Leonhard Weiss, also emphasizes the practical relevance: "We can really gain experience here that isn't always possible on the construction site. You then bring your knowledge of the technology back to the company – and that can really make a difference there."

More than just a machine – a multi-tool for the future

From September, the Volvo EW220E will be firmly integrated into training processes, including practical exercises, equipment knowledge and testing. The aim is not just to show the technology, but to experience it in action. The trainees should learn how modern machines are changing work on the construction site – and how they themselves can become part of this development.

With this special machine, the Geradstetten training center is once again demonstrating its pioneering role. It's not just about training – it's about empowering young people to play an active role in shaping the future of construction.

Customized machines for special applications

In addition to the standard machine program, Volvo CE offers individual special solutions that are tailored to specific requirements in construction, demolition, tunneling, quarrying or material handling. These solutions are developed in close cooperation with the customer, the local dealer and the technical experts at Volvo. The aim is to deliver machines that are practical and ready for operation, optimally adapted to the respective site. The special solutions are implemented according to high Volvo quality standards and are fully documented and maintainable.
