E & JW Glendinning Ltd, has taken delivery of a Volvo L350F wheeled loader as one of its front line machines for its Linhay Quarry, Ashburton, Devon.
The 52 tonne wheeled loader from Volvo was chosen following a competitive tender process but also in part to a long standing relationship between the two companies. It replaces a Volvo L330 that was originally delivered back in 1998 which has now stood down to be used on secondary duties having clocked up 21366 hours. “We would have liked to have made the change much sooner than this but the effects of the recent recession put our purchasing decision on hold for obvious reasons,” explains Operations Manager Richard Webb. “The fact that the L330 has soldiered on for much longer than expected is testament to the product and after our evaluation of the market and the package on offer from Volvo and a long standing good working relationship with their team, we considered the L350F the preferred replacement for our operations.”
The new L350F will be utilised to load as-blasted limestone at the quarry face, which is then transported by dump truck to a semi-static primary crusher. This in turn will free up a resident eighty tonne excavator, which will be used to feed the crusher producing in excess of 500,000 tonnes per annum. Equipped with a 6.8m³ spade nosed bucket, the loader has also been equipped by Glendinning with a set of Brindley tyre chains for maximum tyre protection in this particular application. “It’s a significant investment but it’s worth it when you consider both the machine’s application coupled with the cost of replacing large earth moving tyres,” says Richard Webb.
The new L350F will offer significant efficiencies in terms of fuel economy and productivity thanks to the combination of the machine’s Stage III Volvo engine producing 535hp, maximum torque reached at just 1400RPM, stronger hydraulics, a Volvo transmission with lock-up and Volvo designed and manufactured axles. As a result, the L350F is easy and comfortable to operate, leading to fast cycle times and sustained high performance throughout the working day, thanks to reduced operator fatigue. Comfort is assured in the Volvo Care Cab, where the operator will enjoy a spacious air-conditioned interior that is insulated from noise, dust and vibrations – the latter thanks to viscous cab mounts and air suspended seat.
E & JW Glendinning produces quarry products, concrete products and asphalt from their facility at Linhay Hill Quarry Ashburton with satellite outlets strategically located in Plymouth and Exeter. They also produce high PSV gritstone chippings and asphalt from their Pigsdon Quarry operation located near Bude in North Cornwall. In addition to this, the company also operates a road maintenance division, contracting to private concerns and local authorities in Devon. The new L350F joins an array of existing Volvo construction equipment products including articulated haulers, excavators and wheeled loaders.
Volvo Construction Equipment Division markets wheeled loaders, articulated haulers, hydraulic excavators, graders, Volvo Utility Equipment and Volvo Road Equipment products in the U.K. There are eight strategically placed customer support centres and a network of utility equipment dealers to ensure high quality customer support is maintained throughout the country.
