(More) made in Germany

Made in germany

Journalists gathered in early April for a ‘Made in Germany’ event at Volvo Construction Equipment’s (Volvo CE) facility in Konz. The highlight of the event was the national launch of the EC250E crawler excavator, a machine that is not only new to the market but from June this year will also roll off the assembly line at the Konz factory.

Voted a top national employer in a recent Focus Magazine survey the event, which was attended by 20 leading journalists, was also used as an opportunity to offer insight into technology set to be introduced in future generations of Volvo machines. In the prototype center, journalists were able to discover future projects for intelligent machines, including THOR – Terraforming Heavy Outdoor Robot. Various joint research projects with universities were also presented, such as a high level camera system that gives a bird’s eye view around the vicinity of a machine – a concept that will soon be available to Volvo customers.

Made in Germany message

A tour of the research and development facilities was followed by visits to the service and training departments, culminating in a tour of the factory itself and its state-of-the-automotive-art Volvo Production System.

“This event offered the opportunity to show the development of the Konz site and to emphasize our Made in Germany message,” commented, Christian Krauskopf, managing director of Volvo CE Germany. “Not only that,” agreed Matthias Keller, head of Volvo CE’s plant in Konz,: “More specifically the event also gave us the opportunity to demonstrate what ‘Made in Konz’ means – it’s development as a production location and dedication to the Volvo core values of quality, safety and environmental care.”

“Once a bucket is attached to the excavator, the center line is automatically secured – and bulky loads will not upset the machine’s balance,” explains Yongun Lee, vice president of Volvo CE Korea. “The extended boom – that we were able to fit straight from the factory – allows operators to keep a safe distance away from the blast furnace.”
