19th century – Age of steam

The 19th century was the "Age of Steam". Munktells, with its pioneering spirit, made considerable contributions to this industrial development era and became a leading manufacturer of steam engines and machinery.

The first traction engine was presented as early as 1854. More than 6 500 traction engines were delivered up till 1921 when manufacture of this product was discontinued.

The steam engine eventually became outdated as combustion engines were developed and disappeared around World War I.

Today, the only steam engines to be found are the ones in toyshops. And in the Munktell Museum, of course.
