1883 – world's first submarine with launchable torpedo

Together with Palmcrantzs Verkstäder, J & CG Bolinders Mekaniska Verkstads AB built Sweden's first submarine and the world's first submarine with the possibility of launching a torpedo while submerged – designed by weapons engineer Torsten Nordenfelt – between 1879 and 1883.

19 m long, 60 t cigar-shaped (as submarines more or less still are) and with just enough space for three persons, it was fitted with a 110 hp steam engine. Before diving, the furnace was closed, the chimney retracted and the course was set – the periscope was not yet invented...

The crew had a candle – partly as light, but also to know there was enough oxygen.

One submarine was sold to Greece. When archenemy Turkey found out, they ordered two.
