So says John Turner, M & J Evans Construction Ltd’s Plant Manager as the company takes delivery of a brand new twenty two tonne Volvo EC220E crawler excavator into its plant fleet.

The new Tier IV compliant EC220E joins a fleet of over 100 excavators and other construction equipment ranging from dump trucks, site dumpers, rollers and other associated equipment which is operated by one of the West Midland’s largest independent civil engineering and construction companies located close to Walsall. This isn’t the first Volvo to join the M& J Evans fleet however as a slightly larger EC250D was purchased just three years ago. “Taking the twenty five tonne Volvo on board was a toe in the water for us but we were pleasantly surprised with the power, performance and lifting capacity of the machine,” explains John Turner. “We had a good opportunity to appraise the Volvo EC220E at last year’s Plantworx exhibition and were extremely impressed with the overall quality of the machine, the operator’s compartment and service access. Taking the machine on a two week trail and evaluation confirmed our opinions about the machine, which led to the subsequent order,” he continues.

And the twenty two tonne machine was subject to some critical feedback from M&J Evans’ operators who, being used to operating a competitive make of machine, found the cab to be extremely comfortable, the overall performance smooth and responsive with good breakout force and exceptional lifting ability. “The EC220E is totally suited to the typical applications we undertake on new house building sites which predominantly involves bulk earthmoving, preparing trenches for drains and sewers, placing sewer rings in the prepared ground and digging foundations. I am extremely happy with the feedback from our operators who say the machine has finesse, is smooth and precise for forming roads with excellent control. The lift mode on the machine is equally very good - an all-round good machine” says Mr Turner.

And just as important is the ease of access for M & J Evans’ service and maintenance technicians according to Mr Turner and the Volvo EC220E isn’t found lacking in this area. The machine features large, wide opening compartment doors with robust handles, hinges and locks providing access to all the major machine components with daily and weekly service points conveniently grouped together. Multiple handrails provide safe and easy access and egress to both the cab and the superstructure. The bolted on punched anti-slip foot plates provide a superior grip for increased safety whilst on the machine. There is a large tool box storage compartment on the offside of the machine which also contains the windscreen washer bottle and diesel replenishment hose.

Powered by a six cylinder Volvo engine developing 174 nett hp the EC220E offers the latest in engine technology and operating sophistication. For example pump flow is controlled for combined digging and swinging operations to reduce the flow loss through the overload relief valves, whilst maintaining digging power and maximum swing torque. When Eco mode is selected the machine provides better fuel efficiency without loss of performance in most operating conditions.

The Volvo Care Cab offers a large roomy interior with plenty of leg room and foot space. The excellent all round visibility is enhanced by pressurized and filtered cab air supplied by a 14 vent, climate control system. An adjustable easy to read LCD colour monitor provides real time information of the machine functions, important diagnostic information and a wide variety of work tool settings. The monitor also doubles as a monitor for the rear view camera.

“Another good reason for us choosing Volvo again is the fact we appreciate dealing directly with the manufacturer and we’ve had superb support from Volvo’s customer support centre at Minworth for the existing EC250D and our two Volvo articulated haulers which are covered by Volvo service agreements,” says John Turner.

Founded as a limited company in 2003, M&J Evans Construction Ltd is a groundworks and civil engineering company from Walsall in the West Midlands which operates as a sub-contractor for many major construction companies over various market sectors in the construction industry. Covering a wide radius from its West Midlands headquarters the company offers a one stop shop solution for house building infrastructures for companies such as Redrow, Persimmon, Taylor Woodrow, Wimpey and Bellway to name but a few. Besides utilising its own plant fleet on such projects the company also has equipment available for general hire.

Volvo Construction Equipment Division markets wheeled loaders, articulated haulers, hydraulic excavators, graders, Volvo utility equipment and Volvo road equipment products in the U.K. There are eight strategically placed customer support centres and a network of utility equipment dealers to ensure high quality customer support is maintained throughout the country.
