Danny McAuliffe, proprietor of agricultural contracting company Springbok Haulage based at Kilkhampton, Cornwall has just added a new Volvo ECR25D compact excavator to his arsenal of equipment complete with an impressive array of specialist attachments. The machine has been supplied by Volvo’s utility dealer for the south west of England - Plant & Engineering Services.

The new 2.5 tonne ECR25D replaces a smaller EC15 model and was chosen primarily for its optimum size for the typical work Danny McAuliffe undertakes. “The smaller machine proved very reliable but I needed to increase the size and operating capacity of the machine to tackle a wide variety of jobs requiring the need of different hydraulically operated implements,” explains Danny. “I took the larger ECR25D on demo from Plant and Engineering Services which proved to be just the right size – not just for handling the different attachments but also for moving the machine easily from site to site.”

In order to facilitate the operation of a range of different attachments that have been ordered alongside the new machine, the ECR25D has been fitted with an optional X3 rotation circuit (hammer/shear lines come as standard on the machine). The arsenal of attachments include a range of buckets including a tilting slope bucket, a hydraulically operated 2’ diameter saw, a flail, log grab and a hydraulic hammer which doubles up as a post driver. “For me this is an ideal tool carrier,” continues Danny. “The machine will be utilised for most of its time using these different attachments with some occasional digging. So far I’ve been very pleased with its performance, stability and all round compactness working in very tight confines. Not only that, I have established a good relationship with Plant & Engineering Services who have given me a high degree of support with my previous machine and advice on selecting this latest model.”

The ECR25D is the smallest zero swing model in the Volvo compact excavator range and is powered by a 1.1 litre low emission engine developing 21hp. With an operating weight of 2.5 tonnes the ECR25D is available with a choice of short or long dipper arm giving a reach of either 4.48 metres or 4.77meters and a dig depth measuring from 2.67 metres to a generous 2.96 metres. The zero swing excavator design provides exceptional stability which can slew within the width of its tracks and is therefore ideal for much of Danny McAuliffes’s applications – for example working in close proximity to walls and fences yet with sufficient reach to safely tackle the pruning of overgrown hedgerows. Simultaneous control of slew and offset movements provides faster, more precise performance and all hydraulic functions are performed in total independence for more control and less delay when handling multiple tasks. An added bonus is the ability to operate the wide range of hydraulic attachments using proportional control if required.

An automatic two-speed travel system engages when operating in high speed mode, automatically shifting gear from high to low according to the travel load. Another feature for increased efficiency is the standard auto-idling system that lowers engine speed to idle if a control is not used for five seconds. The engine reverts to the pre-selected speed almost instantly when any control is moved. This system delivers lower fuel consumption, longer engine life and less environmental noise.

The ECR25D features Volvo’s industry-leading comfortable cab for less fatigue and more production. The ergonomically-designed cab offers greater leg and foot room, making it one of the most spacious in its category.
