Impressive fuel economy, productivity and operator comfort has prompted Edward Mackay Contractor Ltd to purchase its fifth Volvo excavator

Sutherland based Edward Mackay Contractor Ltd has opted for a second Volvo EC140E excavator, thanks to the machine’s impressive fuel economy, operator comfort and acceptance and general productivity according to Director, Scott Mackay.

“We’ve been operating Volvo articulated haulers for a long time and in recent years we have been adding Volvo excavators to our mixed fleet of equipment and found them to be productive economical machines, finding favour with our operators in terms of comfort and performance,” comments Scott. “In particular, we find the EC140 an optimum-sized excavator for building roads on wind turbine and pipeline projects and compact enough for working on confined building sites,” he continues.

The EC140E is powered by four-cylinder Stage-IV compliant Volvo engine, developing 122 nett hp and offers the latest in engine technology and operating sophistication. For example, pump flow is controlled for combined digging and swinging operations to reduce the flow loss through the overload relief valves, whilst maintaining digging power and maximum swing torque. When Eco-mode is selected, the machine provides better fuel efficiency without loss of performance in most operating conditions. In addition, boom and arm geometry provide highly competitive digging forces and lifting capacities, which makes for faster work cycles. For example, the maximum reach with the standard 3m dipper arm is 8.85 metres and gives a maximum dig depth of 6 metres, but, in particular, the lifting capacity at full reach across carriage is a generous 1.9 tonnes. Hose rupture valves are fitted as standard to the boom and dipper cylinders, as are quick-fit hydraulics and a hammer/shear service. Other options specified by Edward Mackay are additional LED work lights, guard rails around the machine’s superstructure and a boom proximity limit switch. The EC140E has been supplied with a powerlatch quick coupler and a range of buckets including a 75” hydraulic tilt bucket.

The new EC140E joins four other Volvo excavators ranging from the compact EC18E to the forty tonne EC380E in an overall fleet of twenty-two excavators together with an array of articulated haulers, loading shovels, rollers and site dumpers. For complete peace of mind, Edward Mackay has taken out a Volvo Gold full repair and maintenance contract whereby SMT GB will take care of all the servicing and repair needs for the machine going forwards.

First established in 1958 by Edward Mackay, the business is currently run by three generations of the Mackay family specialising in all aspects of the industry including civil engineering, ground working, quarrying, screening and crushing, plant hire, renewable energy, haulage and forestry work. The company covers the whole of the north of Scotland from its operating bases located in Brora and Beauly, employs sixty personnel and operates a fleet of seven tipper and three articulated lorries.

SMT GB markets Volvo Construction Equipment products which include wheeled loaders, articulated haulers, hydraulic excavators, Volvo utility equipment and Volvo road equipment products in Great Britain. There are eight strategically placed Customer Support Centres, a dedicated National Used Equipment Centre and a network of utility equipment dealers to ensure high quality customer support is maintained throughout the country.
