Breaking with tradition, Corby based KKD Services has opted for a new Volvo ECR58D for the first time. The 5.8 tonne reduced swing radius machine has been supplied by Volvo Construction Equipment’s utility dealer SM Plant Ltd.

Choosing the ECR58D from Volvo is a new departure for the ten year old plant hire, groundworks and agricultural contracting company which up until now has operated several alternative makes of equipment. “We have, on occasions, cross hired in Volvo machines and been pretty impressed with their performance and quality,” comments managing director Kersley Kershaw-Dalby. “That coupled to positive third party references and the prospect of good residual values helped us decide to opt for the new ECR58D,” he continues.

And quite a bit of thought has gone in to specifying the machine to align it to the majority of contracting work that KKD Services undertakes. For instance the machine has been equipped with a Tefra hydraulic hitch, hose rupture valves, air conditioning for the operator and additional work lights. Besides the hammer / shear hydraulic circuit that comes as standard, the ECR58D supplied to KKD has been installed with an optional x3 rotation circuit specifically to power a Pro Dem hydraulic rotating selector grab. The machine has also been supplied with a hydraulically tilting ditch bucket and in order to be able to interchange with the company’s existing arsenal of attachments, the machine has been supplied with 45 mm pins at the business end of the machine.

The Volvo ECR58D is powered by a Volvo 2.6 litre low emission engine producing 48 hp coupled to a load sensing hydraulic system for fast cycle times and smooth control. The machine offers a generous horizontal reach of 6.3 metres and a lift capacity of 660kg at full reach across the carriage. Operator comfort and excellent access to all the service points have added to Mr Kershaw-Dalby’s appreciation of the machine; for instance the ECR58D has a comfortable, spacious cab with a wide uncluttered floor. The instrument panel provides operators with at-a-glance monitoring of all key functions and operator fatigue is reduced through easy-grip, high response joystick control levers. The rubber-mounted cabs reduce whole-body vibration, and external noise minimizing the rigors of the jobsite.

KKD Services offers a full range of agricultural contracting services, operated plant hire and a groundworks contracting service covering the whole of the East Midlands, East Anglia, Northampton shire and Bedfordshire.
