Sum up the opinions of Richard Cooper, Managing Director of Cotswold Recycling Company Ltd, as he takes delivery of two brand new Volvo excavators into his growing fleet of recycling, crushing and screening equipment.
A new Stage IV compliant EC220E weighing in at twenty two tonnes and its larger twenty five tonne brother, the EC250E join a fleet of existing Volvo excavators and loading shovels, mobile crushers and screening units operated by Bristol based Cotswold Recycling Company Ltd. The quality and reliability of the company’s older Volvo machines along with first class after sales support when it has been required along with strong residual values is the reason for choosing two new machines from Volvo according to Mr Cooper. “We really cannot fault Volvo for their back up, the productivity of their excavator product, good fuel economy and high residual values,” commented Managing Director Richard Cooper. “In addition, it’s important our operators have a say in what we invest in and they certainly appreciate the comfort and performance of the Volvo machines. Ultimately the package on offer made choosing the new EC220E and EC250E an easy decision,” he continued.
The Stage IV final six cylinder engine develops 174 nett horsepower for the EC220E whereas the power unit in the larger 25 tonne EC250E is an eight cylinder engine developing 213hp. Operators can select the best work mode for the task at hand, ensuring optimum performance and fuel efficiency. Modes include: I-idle, F-fine, G- general, H-heavy or P-power, with the machine automatically setting the appropriate engine speed for the work mode and ECO mode is a new feature that works in G to H
(or P) mode. Pump flow is controlled for combined digging and swinging operations to reduce the flow loss through the overload relief valves, while maintaining digging power and maximum swing torque. Eco mode provides better fuel efficiency without loss of performance in most operating conditions.
The Volvo Care Cab on both excavators offers a large roomy interior with plenty of leg room and foot space. The excellent all round visibility is enhanced by pressurized and filtered cab air supplied by a 14 vent, climate control system. An adjustable easy to read LCD colour monitor provides real time information of the machine functions, important diagnostic information and a wide variety of work tool settings. The monitor also doubles as a monitor for the rear view camera. Both machines have been supplied to Cotswold Recycling with full ‘boxing ring’ style hand rails mounted on the superstructure together with standard hammer shear hydraulics and optional X3 rotation circuits.
“We find the twenty two tonne machines are ideal for loading screens and crushers whilst the larger EC250E is normally deployed on pulveriser and shear work. It’s a solid stable machine and optimised for this type of work,” says Richard.
Monitoring of the machine’s vital functions and whereabouts is made easy thanks to Volvo’s CareTrack telematics system which is standard on these latest additions. CareTrack provides operational data remotely via the internet, including fuel consumption and idle time, all helping to reduce cost of ownership and maximise utilisation.
