They may be relatively small but Rickmar pack a mighty punch when it comes to customer service, something they attribute to taking a traditional approach. They strongly believe that building good relationships with customers is what makes them stand out amongst their competitors.
Chris Brodrick and Stewart Marshall established Rickmar back in 1981 from Chris’ house in Skellingthorpe. Four years later, in 1985, they moved to a unit in Westminster road where they began selling spare machine parts for both the home market and abroad.
Volvo approached Rickmar in 2003 to ask them to join their team of utility equipment dealers and four years later the business moved to their current location in Saxilby, Lincoln. Chris and Stewart’s sons, Ady and Andy joined the business 27 years and 24 years ago respectively and the whole team are able to assist with new machine sales, part sales, servicing, repairs and all areas of customer service. Rickmar have a workshop on site and they all have the skills and experience to service and repair machines. Rickmar also offer a breakdown service and are able to provide a quick response to call outs.
Ady comments: “There is more of a personal feel to our business compared to our competitors. We get to know our customers and offer a full service. We can sell machines and parts and book a machine in for a service in just one call. When dealing with a customer’s questions, if there is anything we don’t know then we have the support and knowledge from Volvo and are able to respond very quickly which is a strong advantage we have over a lot of our competitors.”
Meet the team:
Ady studied at Agricultural College for three years before working at Rickmar Plant Sales. I asked Ady what it was he enjoys about his role and what made Rickmar stand out from the competition. “Every day is different, we are not a 9-5 business and are available at any time to respond to our customer needs. That is what makes us unique and we all enjoy what we do.”
Andy also studied at Agricultural College before joining the team 24 years ago. He noticed that working for the business with Ady gave him added experience and knowledge. “Experience is what you need to be able to deliver a good service. At Rickmar it doesn’t matter who answers the phone as any one of us are able to help with all aspects of the business.”
Chris and Stewart were both Directors at Dolan Plant Sales before they started the business 35 years ago. Chris says: “Volvo are a good company to deal with and we have a good relationship with them."
