Construction Equipment Great Britain

Stuart Smith

Depot Based Mobile Engineer

When did you join SMT GB/Volvo and in what role?
I started working for SMT GB in April 2015 after working for the same plant hire company for 17 years. I started there at the age of 16 as a fitter’s mate where we looked after a fleet of 30 machines. By the time I left the company I was the maintenance manager at the age of 33 and wanted to pursue a career in engineering, working for the brand I love having spent my whole adult working life looking after Volvo. My role here is DBM Engineer, I’m also the safety rep and a first aider.

How has your career developed since joining the company?
How one develops at SMT GB very much depends on the person - there are many opportunities within the company with great support for anyone wishing to better themselves. I have learned a vast amount of technical information in 3 years here. This, along with my years of experience as an engineer, allows me to deliver the very best standards to our customers.

My career is far more technical since joining as we carry out diagnostics using the latest equipment with some of the best training in the industry, carried out at our training school at Duxford. I very much look forward to the exciting changes we will be going through as a new dynamic company and growing my role in SMT GB.

What does a typical day involve?
There are no ‘typical days’ as one phone call can change your whole week. The work we carry out varies vastly from routine servicing to electrical diagnostics. You can expect to do every job you could possibly imagine, from full machine overhauls in the workshop to hydraulic fault finding in the Lake District. All this goes in hand with filling out accurate service reports, communicating with customers risk assessments and using our diagnostic software Tech Tool 2 and our service information program PROSIS for parts and technical information.

What skills are needed to carry out your role?
You have to be able to communicate very well with customers, work well with colleagues and the office, be computer literate and have a good understanding of electrical / hydraulic principles, as well as being self-motivated and able to work safely, well and unsupervised, diagnose faults and be trustworthy, working well under pressure and having a real drive for the job and company, identifying new revenue streams and up-selling to customers.

What is the biggest challenge in your role?
Delivering good customer satisfaction 100% of the time is by far the biggest challenge I face - delivering the best customer service and the highest possible standards are paramount.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
I love everything about my job especially the new challenges I face with every job - I get a lot of satisfaction after identifying and rectifying faults, interacting with customers on a daily basis, and the dedicated workforce I work with give you a nice amount of pride.

What do you like about working for SMT GB?
SMT GB is a very forward looking, customer focused and dynamic company that encourage entrepreneurship. Our company is focused not only on its staff but is also about being the best in the business. SMT GB invests heavily in supplying it engineers with the best tooling and latest training, this makes us proud and energised. Who wouldn’t want to work here?
