The best companies are always on the lookout for the best people. So come and talk to us about the SMT GB Apprentice Programme.
Don’t be fooled into thinking that construction equipment is just about machines on building sites. The construction equipment industry is hugely important in the UK, serving a wide variety of growing sectors, from quarries and road construction to materials handling at ports and recycling facilities.
As one of the world’s leading suppliers of construction equipment and a major player in the UK, SMT GB is looking for talented young people for the next Apprentice cohort, to develop into the next generation of Field Service Engineers. This is a highly technical role demanding not just mechanical skills but also hydraulic and electrical diagnostic ability, as well as a keen sense of wanting to provide the best customer service in the industry.
If you have a genuine interest in an engineering career and meet the programme requirements (GCSE passes in English, Maths and a Science subject), then we can put you on the path to an extremely rewarding career with a globally recognised brand.
Our CITB accredited 4 year programme is designed to give you the high level of knowledge and skills that you’ll need to be the very best in the industry. It is delivered in partnership with the National Construction College and is a blend of residential college study; work based learning at your local SMT GB Customer Support Centre; and SMT course at our Technical Training Centre in Cambridgeshire.
If you join the programme, you’ll go through an induction at the local Customer Support Centre covering important topics like Health & Safety and the SMT GB Way, and getting the feel of being in the workplace as well as meeting your mentor. This is followed by a week-long team building activity to get to know the other new apprentices on the programme.
College attendance is 30 weeks, spread over the first three years. The first two years are spent achieving the City & Guilds qualification in Plant Maintenance, followed by the Advanced Plant Maintenance qualification in year three. When not at college you’ll be getting experience working on equipment in our workshops and later in the field as well. This will give you the portfolio of evidence you need to be awarded the NVQ II & III qualification that complement your academic achievement. You will then be ready for the final year during which you will extend your knowledge and experience in the field as well as advanced SMT courses at the Technical Training Centre to learn about the ever changing technology and products being developed.
Throughout your apprenticeship, whether you are at College or on site you will be representing SMT GB and we will expect the highest levels of professional conduct and commitment. Our programme will build character and equip you with the technical knowledge, skills, attitude and customer service ethos that distinguishes the SMT Service Engineer from the rest.
