This October, Volvo Construction Equipment will once again pit EMEA’s best and brightest operators against one another in an epic battle of speed, precision and technique that is the Operators Club Final 2017.
This year’s Volvo CE Operators Club Final will see 33 finalists from 16 countries come face-to-face at the Volvo Ocean Race Village in Alicante, Spain for the ultimate round of gruelling challenges. The operator with the quickest time – taking into account any penalities for mistakes – will be named the Operators Club champion 2017.
The event will take place 24 hours before the first leg of the 2017 Volvo Ocean Race, which will begin at the same location. This year, the Operators Club Final will be part of the official Race Village program.
The annual Operators Club Final, organised by Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE), is one of the construction industry’s toughest tests of precision operation. Every year, the best machine operators from Europe and beyond go head-to-head in a competition designed to push their precision and competence skills to the maximum. Challenges have previously included manoeuvring Volvo excavators through obstacle courses, slaloming articulated haulers and demonstrating precise movements with various attachments – all against the clock.
Last year, the honour went to two-time winner Ermes Gemo from Italy, following a year of challenging local heats and a final test of speed, precision and technique at the Volvo CE compact excavator plant in Belley, France. Gemo will be defending his title once more in 2017.
An established competition
The Operators Club was first launched in Germany in 1998 and is open to operators of any brand of machinery. Today it is has more than 27,000 members and is growing continuously. Each of the 16 Operators Club branches runs its own events throughout the year, allowing operators to brush up their skills in a safe environment and share experiences with their peers. Networking opportuntities are also available through local Operators Club portals and social media groups. Other membership benefits include free entrance to exhibitions (such as Bauma), exclusive hospitality, factory visits and discounts on Volvo CE merchandise.
"The Operators Club is an excellent way for us at Volvo CE to give something back to operators – they are often our biggest fans!" says Mats Andersson, vice-president for Marketing & Sales Support within Volvo CE Sales Region EMEA and host of the Operators Club Final 2017.
In accordance with the UN’s sustainability goal, this year’s event is plastic/PVC free. "The Volvo Ocean Race has been plastic-free for a number of years, and I’m proud to say that, as of now, the Operator’s Club Final is committed to this also. Environmental care is one of Volvo CE’s brand values; anything we can do to reduce our impact on the planet is worth doing," he adds.
Watch the action live on Facebook
Volvo CE has a much larger broadcast focus this year, with the potential to reach up to 150,000 viewers online. Volvo CE will be live-streaming all action from the 2017 Operators Club Final on the Volvo CE EMEA Facebook page, starting from 08:00 CET on Saturday 21st October.
"This is a unique opportunity to witness some of the region’s most professional operators in action," Andersson concludes. "Our finalists have beaten thousands of other operators at local events throughout the year so you can imagine just how skilled they are. We’re expecting them to put on a very good show."
