Bringing clarity, confidence and uptime to Portland Group’s quarry operations

In demanding quarrying environments where uptime, predictability and cost control directly impact performance, Volvo CE and dealer partner Babcock are using long-term partnership and lifecycle insight to help Portland Group maintain reliability and plan confidently for the future.

Supporting core quarry operations in South Africa’s Western Cape

Situated in South Africa’s Western Cape, Portland Group is a long-established supplier to major construction and infrastructure projects. The company operates across quarrying, aggregate supply, drilling and blasting, ready-mixed concrete and precast concrete solutions.

In 2012, Portland Group took delivery of its first Volvo machine. Today, more than a decade later, its relationship with Volvo CE and Babcock has evolved to support core operations at its primary Durbanville Quarry, as well as at the neighbouring Paardeberg Quarry near Malmesbury.

Lifecycle planning for high-demand quarrying environments

As Nicol Heyns, Managing Director of Portland Group explains, operating in these high-demand environments places additional pressure on equipment, making lifecycle planning and cost predictability essential.

“Most of our equipment runs on a 10 000-hour operating lifecycle, but in higher-intensity environments we cycle machines out earlier. Babcock assists us with total cost of ownership calculations, which helps us decide when the right time is to replace equipment. That input is critical for maintaining reliability and controlling operating costs.”

By working closely with Portland’s operational teams, Babcock provides insight that extends beyond the machine itself, factoring in utilization, application demands and long-term maintenance considerations. This approach reflects Volvo CE’s global model of supporting customers through a strong dealer network that combines equipment, services and support solutions. In doing so, it enables Portland group to plan capital investment more effectively while helping to reduce the risk of unplanned downtime.

A quarry equipment fleet built for reliability and productivity

Portland’s current Volvo CE equipment fleet across its Durbanville and Paardeberg quarries reflects this long-term investment in reliability and productivity. It comprises a mix of articulated haulers, excavators, and wheel loaders, all configured to support high-output quarrying operations. The fleet has grown steadily since that first Volvo machine was delivered.

“Babcock consistently goes above and beyond what you would normally expect from a supplier,” Heyns adds. “Their team makes a real effort to understand our operational pressures, assess our equipment requirements and accommodate us wherever possible.”

Dealer support and responsiveness that makes the difference

Accessibility and responsiveness have also been key differentiators in the partnership, underpinned by Volvo CE’s approach to customer support and long-term value delivery through its dealer network.

“Senior management is always accessible - often just a phone call away - which says a lot about their commitment,” says Heyns. “The people we deal with are professional, direct and easy to work with. There’s a genuine culture of supporting the customer and helping you achieve what you need to achieve.”

From Babcock’s perspective, this close operational alignment reflects Volvo CE’s wider focus on understanding the challenges its customers face in day-to-day operations and supporting them with the right machines, services and insights.

“Our role is to understand how customers are using their equipment in real operating conditions and support them with the right insights at the right time,” says Quintin O’Reilly, Head of Sales at Babcock. When you combine reliable machines with lifecycle planning and responsive support, it creates operational stability and a platform for sustainable growth.”

Building long-term confidence through Volvo CE quarrying solutions

For Portland Group, that stability translates into long-term confidence.

“Knowing what your operational costs are, having reliable machines and minimising downtime makes a huge difference,” Heyns explains. “It allows us to operate consistently and gives us the confidence to grow.”

In a competitive supplier landscape, Portland believes the depth of support enabled by Volvo CE and delivered locally by Babcock sets the partnership apart.

“There are many suppliers in the market, but once you work with Babcock, you understand why it’s worth it,” Heyns concludes. “There aren’t many companies in South Africa that can offer the level of backup and support that Babcock does.”

The relationship reflects Volvo CE’s commitment to delivering solutions that extend beyond the machine itself—combining robust equipment, lifecycle insight and responsive dealer support to help customers perform today while planning confidently for the future.
