New Volvo wheeled P6870C paver for Worksop Tarmacadam

Worksop Tarmacadam Company Ltd has chosen a new Volvo wheeled P6870C paver for its front line operations replacing an eight year old ABG473.

Established back in 1977 by Managing Director Barry Connor, Worksop Tarmacadam Company Ltd has a tradition for providing a quality service to an established portfolio of clients in the commercial, private and house building sectors. The family run business based at Claylands Industrial Estate, Worksop was further enhanced in the late eighties when Barry’s son Colin joined the company and learnt the business from the ground up working with the surfacing crews. The company specialises in a whole manner of applications from general surfacing for private contracts to supplying first stage road, base and binder courses on new housing developments and final adoptions to roads and access ways once buildings are completed. This includes replacing damaged kerbs, attending to raised ironworks, final surfacing and line marking – in fact offering a one stop shop for their clients.

The company recently took the step of replacing an eight year old ABG 473 through a competitive tender process. “One of the main deciding factors for selecting the new P6870C was the quality of the product and the engineering built into it,” comments Operations Director Colin Connor. “It’s certainly a premium product but as we will be operating this as our front line machine for many years to come we wanted to assure ourselves we were buying quality and a product that would stand the test of time.”

The new P6870C wheeled paver maintains many of the features originally introduced on the ABG 6870, for instance continuous independent traction control over all six wheels. Now powered by a Volvo D6 Stage IIIB compliant 175hp engine, the P6870C is further enhanced with the EPM II – an electronic paver management system which now incorporates a ‘Settings Management’ system allowing the operator to store up to twelve parameter settings for the major functions such as screed temperature, tamping & vibrating, conveyor, auger & paving speeds. The machine retains other features such as the ‘Smart Power’ offering optimum power for the job in hand together with 6x6 ‘Smart Drive’ technology for unparalleled traction. Even on the most difficult bases, tractive forces are automatically adjusted according to the weight of material in the machine’s 12 tonne capacity hopper. The machine demonstrates a high degree of manoeuvrability thanks to the ‘Active Steering’ feature with an inside turning radius of just 2.5 metres. “Since putting the new paver to work we have been immensely impressed with the machine’s manoeuvrability, especially in tight areas which we find pretty much common place in many of the jobs we undertake,” says Colin Connor.

Screed performance is a distinct feature on Volvo pavers. The P6870C has a variable screed width of between 2.5 and 5 metres in standard configuration but can be fitted with optional extensions to provide a generous width of 9 metres. The machine has a theoretical output of up to 700 tonnes per hour at varying screed widths and depths.

Operator comfort and user friendliness is another important factor for Worksop Tarmacadam’s road crews. For instance, the steering wheel, which allows for a particularly sensitive control of the machine, can be placed in various positions around the EPM II (Electronic Paver Management) control panel. The rigid all weather roof can be manually lowered along with the exhaust pipe for transportation and features fibre glass roof extensions which can easily be extended or retracted as required. “There has been a significant leap in technology on the paver compared to the old ABG473, but my operating crews have adapted to the new paver very well and appreciate the machine’s low noise levels, manoeuvrability and easy to use controls,” continues Colin Connor. “Underpinning all of that is the excellent level of service support we get from the team at Volvo which is another reason why we’ve decided to add their latest wheeled paver to our fleet.”

Volvo Construction Equipment Division markets wheeled loaders, articulated haulers, hydraulic excavators, graders, Volvo utility equipment and Volvo road equipment products in the U.K. There are eight strategically placed customer support centres and a network of compact equipment dealers to ensure high quality customer support is maintained throughout the country.
