New Volvo Batch at Quattro (UK) Ltd

Quattro (UK) Ltd of Park Royal north west London has taken delivery of a new batch of Volvo loading shovels and excavators as part of a major investment for its recycling, aggregates and hire business.

Established twenty years ago Quattro (UK) Ltd has developed its activities to include machine hire and the recycling of all types of construction materials including reclaimed aggregates, demolition waste, road planings, soils and general construction waste across five sites strategically based in west and north west London. Most notably the Company has recently made a significant investment with the commissioning of a new concrete batching plant at its Thorney Lane site near Iver, Slough which is capable of producing up to 80m³ of ready-mixed concrete per hour, using either primary or reclaimed aggregates. Part of this recent investment has been the purchase of an additional two new Volvo loading shovels and four new Volvo EC220D excavators.

Joining the fleet are two L150G loading shovels one of which will be put in charge of the newly commissioned batching plant at the Thorney Lane site whilst the second machine will go to work close by at Quattro (UK) Ltd’s new aggregate washing facility which produces clean reclaimed aggregates for use in construction. Two of the four EC220D twenty two tonne excavators have joined the Company’s hire fleet whilst the remaining two machines have been deployed at the Brentford site recycling and sorting industrial waste. Both units have been equipped with additional hydraulic circuits to facilitate the use of rotating selector grapples.

Featuring a 13 litre Stage IIIB compliant 300hp engine, opti-shift transmission and axles all designed and manufactured by Volvo, the L150G has a full turn tipping load of 17.2 tonnes and a 20% increase in lifting force and 10% increase in breakout force over its predecessor. This coupled to the engine output with high torque at low engine rpm has resulted in faster cycle times and increased productivity.  Two stronger, variable displacement load-bearing axial piston pumps and hoses have been introduced to handle the increased pressures.  These provide superior control of the load and attachments, as well as high breakout force, faster lifting and tilt functions.  A new hydraulic cooling system has been designed to reduce the working temperatures by up to 20oC over the F series model. Fuel savings are further enhanced by the Volvo Eco pedal encouraging the operator to run the machine at its optimum rpm in the engine’s torque curve. The L150G’s delivered to Quattro (UK) Ltd feature L3 tyres, Groeneveld automatic greasing systems and 3.8m³ straight lipped buckets.

The twenty two tonne EC220D benefits from the use of Volvo’s Stage IIIB D6 engine, delivering 175hp (129kW) of power and 849Nm of torque, coupled to an improved hydraulic system with larger pumps which in turn significantly improves hourly fuel consumption with shorter cycle times. Operators can select the best work mode for the task at hand, ensuring optimum performance and fuel efficiency. Modes include: I-idle, F-fine, G-general, H-heavy or P-power, with the machine automatically setting the appropriate engine speed for the work mode and ECO mode is a new feature that works in G to H (or P) mode. Pump flow is controlled for combined digging and swinging operations to reduce the flow loss through the overload relief valves, while maintaining digging power and maximum swing torque. Eco mode provides better fuel efficiency without loss of performance in most operating conditions. The new ‘smart’ hydraulics system is designed for high productivity, high digging capacity, easy manoeuvrability and class leading fuel economy. It features improvements that increase total flow and cycle times. Independent and simultaneous movements of the digging equipment are controlled by an ‘automatic sensing work mode’. It can also prioritize flow according to the work being done – e.g. to the boom for faster raising when loading or in deep excavations; to the arm during levelling or swing during large slewing angles.

“We’ve run Volvo shovels and dumptrucks for many years which have proved a good return on investment as far as reliability and residual values are concerned,” says Plant Manager Mick McDermott. “The excavators on the other hand, are replacing another brand and we have high expectations that they will perform in the same manner as our other Volvos and give an overall saving in fuel economy.”

Quattro (UK) Ltd are able to offer a broad range of services including; Road Haulage, Plant Hire and Waste Management. These services, when combined with its ready mixed concrete plant and ability to supply both primary and reclaimed aggregates make Quattro (UK) Ltd the ideal 'one stop shop' for the Construction and Utilities Industries, servicing west and north west London.

Volvo Construction Equipment Division markets wheeled loaders, articulated haulers, hydraulic excavators, graders, Volvo utility equipment and Volvo road equipment products in the U.K. There are eight strategically placed customer support centres and a network of utility equipment dealers to ensure high quality customer support is maintained throughout the country.
