Collins Earthworks Ltd of Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, has taken delivery of nine Volvo excavators and a twenty tonne SD200 soil compactor as it increases its fleet of predominantly Volvo badged equipment to meet an increase in demand for muck shifting contracts nationwide.
The mix of Volvo excavators includes six twenty two tonne EC220D’s, two twenty five tonne EC250D’s and a refurbished seventy tonne EC700B and all have been deployed on a variety of large muck shifting projects around the country. “The reason we’ve opted for Volvo once again is simple,” states Managing Director David Collins. “It’s all down to the back up and the quality of service we receive from Volvo irrespective of where in the country we are working. They’re second to none when it comes to supporting us.” On top of that Mr Collins also cites the package on offer together with the expectation of high residual values when the time comes to trade.
These latest editions now brings Collins Earthworks’ fleet of Volvo excavators to thirty five machines with the seventy tonne EC700B being the largest so far. “We were really looking for a 50 tonne machine for a specific one million m³ muck shifting project in the Midlands but the deal including this refurbished machine was too good to overlook and so far we’ve been very impressed with the machine’s performance,” says David Collins.
The EC220D benefits from the use of Volvo’s Stage IIIB D6 engine, delivering 175hp (129kW) of power and 849Nm of torque, whilst its larger brother the EC250D, has an output of 202hp (151kW) and a torque of 1012Nm. In both cases the six cylinder engines are coupled to an improved hydraulic system with larger pumps over the previous C series models, significantly improving hourly fuel consumption with shorter cycle times. Operators can select the best work mode for the task at hand, ensuring optimum performance and fuel efficiency. Modes include: I-idle, F-fine, G-general, H-heavy or P-power, with the machine automatically setting the appropriate engine speed for the work mode and ECO mode is a new feature that works in G to H (or P) mode. Pump flow is controlled for combined digging and swinging operations to reduce the flow loss through the overload relief valves, while maintaining digging power and maximum swing torque. Eco mode provides better fuel efficiency without loss of performance in most operating conditions.
The SD200 soil compactor is the second Volvo compactor to join the fleet and features dual / variable frequency and dual amplitude with the capability to match vibration frequency to natural frequency of material to achieve optimum compaction. The machine has an operating weight of 20.3 tonnes.
Based in Kirkby-in-Ashfield Collins Earthworks Ltd is ideally placed to cover contracts the length and breadth of Great Britain specialising in muck shifting, aggregates, demolition, civil engineering and general haulage with a fleet of Volvo powered tipper trucks and low loaders.
Volvo Construction Equipment Division markets wheeled loaders, articulated haulers, hydraulic excavators, graders, Volvo utility equipment and Volvo road equipment products in the U.K. There are eight strategically placed customer support centres and a network of utility equipment dealers to ensure high quality customer support is maintained throughout the country.
