Volvo to offer factory fit tiltrotator on compact excavators

by PRESS INFORMATION

Volvo Construction Equipment is to offer a factory fit tiltrotator option on its 5 and 8 tonne compact excavators in Europe from May 2014. This factory fit option of the Steelwrist coupler sees Volvo continue as an industry innovator as it becomes the first OEM to offer a factory fitted tiltrotator with front pin lock and integrated control system for compact excavators (EC55C, ECR58D and ECR88D).

Volvo to offer factory fit tiltrotator on compact excavators

Attachment Product Manager for Volvo CE Sales Region EMEA (Europe – Middle East – Africa), Gilbert Ray said: “Symmetrical type attachment systems are now the leading type of quick coupler used on excavators in the majority of European markets and this factory fit option again sees Volvo at the forefront in the industry.”

The factory approved installation includes ergonomic multifunctional joysticks, colour display (for easy adjustment of tiltrotator and presentation of tilt and rotation angle) and tuning of tiltrotator hydraulics.

The Volvo control system offers enhanced simplicity for the operator and it is also more fuel efficient - tuning to ensure optimal settings for the hydraulics. Furthermore, it benefits from improved safety as it is integrated within the safety systems of the base Volvo compact excavator. Meanwhile the Steelwrist tiltrotator attachment offers a superior tilt angle of up to 450, a low build height and includes a new front pin lock feature (FPL) that means buckets are securely coupled.

The FPL system exceeds regulatory requirements and means attachments are engaged through two separate mechanical locks. “The risk of dropping a bucket immediately after a tool change is considered by leading construction companies to be one of the greatest safety risks on a construction site,” said Mr. Ray. “The patented positive lock indicator means the coupler indicates to the operator that the coupler is locked in position and therefore greatly reduces the risk of dropping. This innovative system differs from other symmetrical quick couplers in that they only have a negative indication, which signals that the coupler is open.”

Volvo CE customers will benefit from the factory fitment of the Steelwrist tiltrotator system as it will standardise quality with both the titlrotator ready option and the associated electronics fully supported by Volvo Customer Solutions. Mr. Ray said: “The factory-ready option means uniform installation of the tiltrotator system. Dealers will not have to utilise workshop facilities to fit the system and customers will have the reassurance that fitment is identical time and again and fully supported by Volvo in respect of warranty and parts.”

A similar system will be available from Steelwrist for retrofit on existing excavators in both established and new markets. “This means there will be just one system to learn, which will facilitate safe and fast roll-out,” added Mr Ray.

Optimisation with symmetrical interface buckets on large excavators
Over the past few years Volvo dealers right across Europe have become official distributors of Steelwrist tiltrotators as a result of Volvo CE selecting Steelwrist AB as a preferred supplier in April 2009. Since factory fit tiltrotator first became available on Volvo wheeled (2012) and then crawler excavators (2013) hundreds of units have been fitted on new machines for customers throughout Europe and it is expected the addition of compact crawler excavators will see this number multiply.

The tiltrotator system affords operators pioneering levels of bucket maneuverability and high end precision. The index finger roller controls enable the simultaneous operation of many functions, while enhanced ergonomics reduce strain and improve operator performance.

Alongside the factory fitment of the Steelwrist tiltroator on large wheeled and crawler excavators, Volvo CE now also offers a dedicated bucket range with symmetrical interface. “The new range launched at Bauma last year for both general purpose and heavy duty work has been designed to optimise efficiency and enable operators to attain greater productivity from their wheeled and crawler excavators,” enthused Mr. Ray.
