Together with Palmcrantzs Verkstäder, J & CG Bolinders Mekaniska Verkstads AB built a steam powered submarine between 1879 and 1883. It was designed by weapons engineer Thorsten Nordenfeldt.
The maiden voyage
The submarine made its maiden voyage on Riddarfjärden in Stockholm. A 19-metre long, 60-tonne cigar, it was fitted with a 110 bhp steam engine. Before diving, the furnace was closed,
the chimney retracted and the course was set - there was no periscope. There was space for three people. They had a candle - partly as light, but partly so they could see if they had enough oxygen.
One of these submarines was sold to Greece. When arch-enemy Turkey found out, they ordered two.
